Southern Europe's Mediterranean Sea linking to the Atlantic Ocean has made Europe a dominant economic, social, and cultural force. The main reason lot's of Europeans settled near the Mediterranean its because of fishing and trading capabilities. People also lived in near the Mediterranean in order to have a warm climate and be able to grow crops. The main crops produced in the Mediterranean are Olives. Italy, Greece and Spain produce 80% of the worlds Olive's.

By the early 1900s Southern Europe was dominated by the powers of Italy and France. By then the Ottoman Empire started falling apart and loosing control of the Balkans. By 1912 Greece and Albania attack the Ottoman Empire in order to gain complete independence. In 1917-1925 World War One leads to many small countries forming. Germany starts World War Two in 1938 an eventually conquers Greece and the Balkans since their allies Italy couldn't do so. Germany and Italy loose power in Suothern Europe after Germany's defeat from the Soviet Union. In 1957 the European union is formed and the first Southern Europe countries to join are Italy and France. In 1973-1986 other Southern Europe states join like Porugal, Spain and Greece. This created new borders throughout Southern Europe.
